Lori (Humble Quilts) will be making another mission trip in February, and she’s going to be taking a suitcase of pillowcase dresses. I started making these three years ago, and they are so much fun (see earlier groups for Peru and Bolivia). You can whip up one of these dresses in an hour with nothing but a small piece of fabric and some bias tape, but I like to spend a little more time adding extra elements to the basic pattern. Check out Lori’s post for more information if you’d like to make one of these sweet dresses for little Columbian girls.
Those are so pretty! I really like the additions you’ve made; the girls will feel special in them.
These dresses are lovely! They will be really appreciated! 🙂 You picked really fun prints! Hugs!
We have been making these little dresses at our church and the dresses go to Kenya, Africa with a pastoral minister who is from there. He is able to distribute them in his former home town. However, he has asked if we can find a simple pattern with a small sleeve so that the dresses are modest enough for the girls to wear to church. Do you have any ideas for a pattern adjustment we could do?
I hadn’t really thought of this before, but I have noticed girls in photos wearing the dresses with a little t-shirt underneath — kind of like a jumper — and they looked really cute. I see a few potential problems with making a pattern with a sleeve — it requires more fabric, makes the sewing more complex, and the finished dress would be more constricting, which means it might not fit every girl’s body type.
Having said that, I’m willing to mess around with the pattern, and see if I can come up with something that might work for your group. I’ll get back to you with any results.
