Charley Harper Water Drop Quilt

Posted on January 5, 2012January 7, 2012 by Martha

It’s done, and I’m so happy to finally have all my Christmas presents finished.  The inside of the drop is pretty tightly packed, so I decided to quilt little amoebas between the organisms.  For outside the drop, I was going to quilt wavy horizontal lines, but after stitching a few, I changed my mind and decided to echo quilt around the drop.

There are a few things I’d change if I were ever going to make this quilt again (which is highly unlikely), but overall I’m really happy with the way it turned out.  I love the process of turning a fabulous illustration into a quilt.

hand embroidered & appliqued (with a little painting), hand quilted

Interesting how you took a rather odd subject matter for an illustration and made it into a fabulous wall hanging! The echo quilting was the perfect choice.
    Happy New Year!

Wow! That is fabulous – it is such fun to enlarge the photo and just gaze at the creatures in the water drop! I think your quilting choice was perfect — really emphasizes the shape of the drop.

It’s fantastic!!! I think the echo quilting is perfect, adds a fluid look to it (Like a ripple of water). LOVE LOVE it! Another masterpiece, Martha!

It is GLORIOUS, Martha, don’t you wish Charley Harper was alive to see it? I love the echo quilting, perfect, and especially the amoebas in the water drop itself – that was truly inspired! Excellent quilt!

Looks great Martha. Love the quilting radiating out from the drop like it fell into water. Pretty cool.

This turned out fabulous! Who knew organisms could be so cool? 😉
Your great attention to detail really shines in this unique quilt. If I recall correctly, this was to be a gift to your nephew? I’d love to know his reaction!
